Reading Week 2

Our second ‘Reading Week’ was centred around World Book Day and, to celebrate this, we went big on author visits!  Cherry Cobb began the visits with a virtual assembly for year 7 students. In the run up to this, year 7 had read the opening to her novel and prepared questions to ask upon meeting her. The visit was a delight: students heard a little about Cherry and her journey as a writer, listened to a reading from her book, ‘Will’s War’ and had the chance to ask questions. Our second author, Nik Perring, engaged students into writing through assemblies and whole class workshops. On World Book Day, we had the pleasure of welcoming Tamsyn Murray. Tamsyn worked across college and engaged our students in structuring their own piece of writing. A real ‘hit of the day’ was her meet and greet session with year 7. Our final author was Kathryn Evans, who went down a storm. Students from across college enjoyed her reading workshop, where they learned about her journey into writing as well as practising some of her writing strategies. Year 7 also enjoyed meeting Kathryn at lunch time, where they got time to chat to her and have their books signed. This week we also welcomed ‘Mrs Twiglet’s Book Barn’ as our book fair for the week, where students were able to browse and buy books each lunch time. The Library welcomed students all week with a ‘book and bun’ event, where students borrowed and enjoyed books with us.

Reading Week 1

Our first ‘Reading Week’ launched our motto ‘Read, Discover, Explore’ and saw students enjoy a visit from author Nik Perring. Nik worked with students to create poems and pieces of descriptive writing, which were entered into an in-college writing competition. Within English lessons, students focussed on reading and enjoyed a lesson where they began work to enter into the competition. From this, Nik ran a number of writing workshops, in which students from across college took part. Every morning, on their way into school students were also encouraged to stop by the ‘book swap’ stall, where they could swap a book they had finished reading. Each lunch time, students had the opportunity to browse the book fair, or enjoy further reading activities in The Library. Assemblies and form time tasks during this week also promoted reading
